I celebrate my birthday every year on August 22nd and this year I made a resolution to myself. I’ve struggled to find time in recent years to find the time to write about music, something I truly love. So for the next 366-days, leap year, I’m going to attempt to write about 366 different songs. Will I make it or fall short? It’s unlikely I am going to get to 366-songs but I sure as hell am going to try. I may not get something posted every day, but I will do my best to make-up the time within a week. More importantly, I want you, the reader, to look at a song in a new light and be inspired to seek out new songs, new albums, new sounds and new artists. No matter where I am or what winds are swirling around me, I find something in each and every songs that
Some songs come through musical discovery via friends, others came from the radio, MTV mix tapes, movie soundtracks, live performances and sometimes being in the right place at the right time. Over the next year I’ll be talking about my friends from high school who exposed me to music that changed my life and probably a slew of songs from Cameron Crowe movies. It may be cliche but his films opened up entire worlds for me via the soundtracks that pumped each film with even more heart. I initially wanted to ensure that the 366 songs would be covered by 366 different artists, but I know i would break this rule within the first month, because I do not want to limit myself when a song may hit me and be particularly inspiring at that moment. Further, I have no idea what the next 366 days entails for me. Songs I may plan on writing about may not fuel me, whereas a slice of pop perfection may hit all the right notes for me. The goal here is to be truthful and inspiring.
At least once a day I hear a song that I wish more people knew about and could be fascinated by. Everybody has something worthy of being shared with the world at large. Some of the artists I will write about succeeded wildly and others are still aiming for the fences even though the chances of the bases ever being loaded for them during game seven of the World Series is unlikely, but in this unrealistic drive comes some of the most magical and mysterious music I have ever had to fortune to hear. Over the next year, consider the 366 I will write about as the ultimate mix tape of discovery. You may not know everything I write about, but hopefully the stories behind the songs will peak your curiosity and maybe, just maybe, these songs will accompany you on your journey just like they have mine.
