What Bon Jovi Should Play On Their Upcoming Tour

This piece is in response to this open letter. When you are a band of Bon Jovi’s stature I’m fully aware that there are a collection of songs that *have* to be played every night no matter what. I’ll outline what has to be performed, what should be performed and what should be retired permanently. Broken up into five parts.

Part I: Every Night Staples
I’m fully aware for the casual fan there are certain songs you must perform, here’s a rundown of what they would expect to see:
“You Give Love A Bad Name”
“Livin’ On A Prayer”
“Wanted Dead Or Alive”
“Bad Medicine”
“Born To Be My Baby”
“Keep The Faith”
“Always”
“It’s My Life”
“Who Says You Can’t Go Home”
“Lost Highway”
Please, just put "Bad Name" somewhere else other than in the first four songs.

Then there’s the rest which should be rotated in and out:
“Raise Your Hands”
“Lay Your Hands On Me”
“Blood On Blood”
“I’ll Be There For You”
“In These Arms”
“Bed of Roses”
“Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night”
“Just Older”
“Have A Nice Day”

Part II: Fan Requests
I sent an email out to a number of fans and received over three hundred responses. Here’s a rundown of songs fans requested. Just for the record, I (and I hope your fans) don’t expect to see each of these songs nightly, but it would be nice to see them pulled out here and there. There’s no reason that three slots every night couldn’t be dedicated to the songs listed below. Fans may not see all the songs they want to see in one show, but this would drive them to see more than one show.

A few notes about the requests:
• Over 94% of the responses mentioned that they want to hear songs from the first two records.
• 87% mentioned “Edge of a Broken Heart” as the song they most want to hear
• 86% mentioned the These Days record in some form and fashion. In fact, as far as full and complete albums being performed, These Days received more votes than any other album. The only other one that was close was New Jersey. For the record, aside from an O2 gig in London (where the album was huge), I don’t expect to see the full album performed in one night. However, considering many fans have gone back and re-discovered this album and most likely missed the band in 1995 when it was toured, something should be played from it nightly.
• Even though I didn’t ask for it, 70% of the emails included songs they don’t want to hear.

Most requested Albums:
1. These Days
2. New Jersey
3. Slippery When Wet
4. 7800
5. Bon Jovi

Most Requested Songs:
1. "Edge of a Broken Heart"
2. "Wild Is The Wind"
3. "Dry County"
4. "I Believe"
5. "Hey God"
6. "Never Say Goodbye"
7. "Something To Believe In"
8. "In & Out of Love"
9. "Tokyo Road"
10. "Let It Rock"
11. "Next 100 Years"
12. "Diamond Ring"
13. "Silent Night"
14. "Hardest Part Is The Night"
15. "This Ain’t A Love Song"
16. "It’s Hard Letting You Go"
17. "Stick To Your Guns"
18. "Roulette"
19. "Cadillac Man"
20. "Shooting Star"
21. "Homebound Train"
22. "Bang A Drum"
23. "Hearts Breaking Even"
24. "Miracle"
25. "If That’s What It Takes"
26. "Get Ready"
27. "Shot Through the Heart" (w/ "Bang Bang intro)
28. "Without Love"
29. "The Distance"
30. "Breakout"
31. "Let’s Make It Baby"
32. "Hook Me Up"
33. "Blood Money"
34. "Living In Sin"
35. "One Wild Night"
36. "Any Other Day"
37. "The Boys Are Back In Town"
38. "I’d Die For You"
39. "Only Lonely"
40. "99 In The Shade"
41. "Hallelujah"
42. "Here Comes The Sun"
43. "Seven Days"
44. "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
45. "Lie To Me"

I know this list is a long shot, especially number one, “Edge of a Broken Heart”. However, you have to realize, this song received more airplay in the late 80’s than any of your minor hits this past decade.

Part III: Richie Sambora’s Set
Having played “Stranger In This Town” and I’ll Be There For You” for the better part of the decade, Richie should take his moment in the spotlight to show how diverse he can be. Why not “Undiscovered Soul”, “Hard Times Come Easy” or even “Fallen From Graceland” from his second solo record? “Rosie” would also be a great choice since it was originally written for New Jersey and would work the crowd up. He could also pull off “We All Sleep Alone” originally written for Cher. My wild card request would be “According To The Gospel Of Love”, written for Desmond Child’s Discipline record. That riff alone could tear the roof off any arena even if it is unknown. If all else fails, how about a cover of Slowhand’s “Layla”, I know Richie would own it and the crowd would react vociferously.

Part IV: Don’t Even Think About It
“I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead”
I’ll admit to being a snob here. This song needs to die. With a bevy of hits at your fingertips, how this song has been performed at every single show for nearly 18 years is beyond me. No one wants to hear this song, especially in lieu of album cuts and hits. After 18 years of performing the song, it’s time to retire it. If it continues to get performed I will have to take drastic measures. I come from a city where my favorite baseball team hasn’t won a World Series in over a century. A similar curse will be put on the Giants. It will start with them never winning a post season game ever again. If the song continues to be performed, the curse will be spread to never making the playoffs, then to never winning against Dallas and if I really have to, I’ll see to it that Dallas wins the division every year. No one wants this, so please, let’s bury this one and perform one of the hundred or so songs you have that are superior to this one.

“Joey”
Reggie and Bernie called, they want their song back.

“I Love This Town”
I know you like this, but I can’t tell you what a mass exodus this song elicits. Every show I have seen this song performed at has found the crowd zapped of its energy. Even at Summerfest last summer in Milwaukee, you came-you saw-you rocked and the show was a high energy party, until you played this song which was the only song of the entire show people sat for and in some cases, headed for the exit early.

All over-played covers
This includes “Shout”, “Twist and Shout”, and “Treat Her Right”. It's time to freshen things up. I wouldn’t mind hearing “Helter Skelter” or “Hallelujah”, but for a band that did some defining covers in the late 1980’s it’s time to take some chances again. Why not Patty Griffin’s “Up To The Mountain”? Never heard it, check it out here:

Part V: Songs That Should Be Temporarily Retired
“Runaway”
This has been performed at nearly every show for the last three tours. While certainly a hit, by no means does this one need to be played every night. This one could gladly sit out the tour allowing for other tracks from the first two records to be heard.

“Radio Saved My Life Tonight”
Great song from the box set but with so many great songs on the set, why only focus on this one song?

Most post-2000 songs
As mentioned earlier, most people seeing this upcoming tour will have seen you before and chances are multiple times this decade. The album cuts from the last few records could be given a rest and no one will really complain (“Complicated”, “We Got It Going On”. “Captain Crash”, “Joey”, etc.). As far as a full-on performance of Lost Highway, there is a DVD of the whole album and if someone really wants to see it, they’ll spend the $10 and save them the headache of paying for parking and having beer spilled on them.

  1. Amen, Brother K...

I was lucky enough to get "Wild is the Wind" in an encore at Giants on 7/29/06, and it was nothing short of magical. Even at the very end of the very last show of a long tour, it was absolutely electrifying. To get something like that each and every show would be fantastic. And I'd KILL to see "On the Edge of a Broken Heart" and "Ballad of Youth" from Mr. Sambora.

Eagerly anticipating The Circle Tour, and hoping "A Change is Gonna Come..."

Oh, and by the way "GO CUBBIES!" This is the year.... ; )

(But PLEASE don't do anything rash and let Dallas win the NFC East. Really. I'd much rather have "Sleep" every show than THAT.)

  2. My votes are way up there on that list! All I'd like is to walk away from a string of Bon Jovi shows with a smile on my face and counting all the different songs I've heard, like I do when I walk away from a Dave Matthews Band tour (my other favorite band). PLEASE PLEASE listen, Jon!!!

  3. I have to LOL, because at the last Jovi concert I attended, Shout, Twist & Shout, and Treat Her Right were all included in the covers. I would die to see Never Say Goodbye performed live - that was the song that hooked me as a permanent fan at the tender age of 6 back in 1986 and I've loved the band ever since. I'm excited to see what the new tour brings...I hope your open letter reaches the ears it was intended for!

I was able to catch Wild Is The Wind at a sound check in Philly for the LH tour (as well as These Days and Mystery Train)and it was a magical moment and will always be a stand out memory for me in my loooong tenure as a Bon Jovi fan.I am really hoping to tap into that magic on this tour. Thank Tony for your ability to "get it out there"

  6. Someone pointed out to me that I listed "In & Out of Love" twice. I made a mistake. #'s 30 to 45 were all within a few votes of each other and I forgot to add "Living In Sin", my apologies.

  7. I agree with you as a die-hard fan. I also feel the pain of having performed in front of people and having to keep the energy high as a frontman. It is no easy task. Just watch the MSG DVD and you'll see that during Dry County (excellent!) a ton of people are sitting down or talking to one another even as the band just nails a great, epic song.

What's a frontman (like Jon) to do? Unfortunately for us die-hards, the set list gets boring a repetitive. Unfortunately, there are a whole bunch of people in the crowd who are out to have a good time for the night and who know Prayer, Bad Name, It's My Life (they can retire that one for all I care).

All that being said, when I see them in Nashville this time around, I hope it's more interesting than the LH show I saw there (which, though good, was a bit dull - cough, Leann Rimes, cough).

    :-)

I've been begging for 'Edge of a Broken Heart" since forever it seems....if they do that one anywhere I will absolutely fall out- Bring it to Charlotte JON!!!!!! Bring it! Dry County would be awesome too- And so relevant now... I swear....they have to change it up this time around, or I just might be done-

    Hey Tony

Darren from Belfast here, long ago trading partner

Superb article, couldn't have said it better myself, just a pity it will be ignored. I've given up I refuse to pay the extortionate ticket prices for the O2 and JBJ should be ashamed of himself during a recession

Still wonderful article fingers crossed he takes notice!

  10. Again, Amen brother. Some fantastic choices there. Would love to see Richie do something both different and of his own.

Tony, you know your stuff and I believe that even without the fan's input, you would have nailed it the same way.

I would wish that the band would take notice, but I'm not sure they will, they "say" they listen to the fans and care about them, but one thing is their words and other their actions.

If "this" was the Bon Jovi that comes out to tour this time, I might even give them another chance, but right now... I won't even bother, I want to see it to believe "again".

    Thanks Tony.

  12. And what about 'Love is War'? I love this song.

Well, if they don't play these rarities and whole albums, as they say they will,it won't be pretty.
Fans are quite upset because of some of those outrageous prices they are charging this tour, when it was supposed to be for the "working man".

  14. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. I would love to see more album cuts from New Jersey, my all time favorite album, played live. "Living In Sin", "Stick To Your Guns", "Ride Cowboy Ride", "Wild Is The Wind"...these are phenomenal songs that still resonate today. "Blood On Blood" has the power to bring the house down every single time. "These Days" is a true masterpiece with the kind of music that makes the listeners stand up and take notice.

I would love to hear "Never Say Goodbye". My very first Bon Jovi concert, 5/20/01 in Albany NY, Dave's piano keyboard broke and the house went dark for several minutes. The crowd went crazy, stamping their feet. Out of the darkness, Jon emerged, calling for his guitar tech. He said, "Hey bring me a guitar, I ain't scared." Richie and Jon went out and nailed an INCREDIBLE version of "Never Say Goodbye" on two guitars. It may have been an acoustic song, but the mood was truly electric. I have never forgotten this moment, even though I have attended a total of 13 Bon Jovi shows.

Great articles! Just my two cents, I've been lucky enough to see Jovi over 80 times and been on stage and some parties with them (it was nice to know someone with the band). I've personally have asked Jon about 5 different times to play "Edge of a Broken Heart". One time he said it will never happen, another time he said "I still get shit about that song to play live from fans (he was laughing, it wasn't in a mean way) and everyone answer was no they won't play it. Also, I asked him to play some other songs and he laughed and said he can't hit the high notes anymore (mainly "These Days") But things change and hopefully the fans will get to him. I do know he does listen to what people say, but how they base their decision is beyond me. Also, THESE TICKET PRICES ARE GETTING OUTRAGOUS.

  16. I could'nt agree more! I've been a diehard Bon Jovi fan since 7800 was released in 1985, but to say the setlist has gotten stale is an understatment. I was lucky enough to see them perform "Silent Night"(one of my favorites)during the Slippery tour in '86. At the time it was considered a hit...but could only pray that it would be in the new setlist. It has'nt been played in decades.
As a diehard, I've always liked most of the album tracks more than the "hits". It puzzles me that a band that has always been so fan oriented would ignore what we really want to see. I only hope and pray they will read the letter and take it to heart.
If I was going to witness "Edge of a Broken Heart" or "Shot Through the Heart" again, maybe I'd attend the concerts again. Although, to see Richie play "We All Sleep Alone" again might get me out by itself!
Don't get me wrong...I know that it's a business, and needs to cater to the majority that only know the hits. But there are a lot of us that truly love the music, and want to see the songs that drew us to the band in the first place. It would be nice to hear at least 2 songs from each record, I'm sure most fans would agree.
Thanks, Anthony, for bringing this to their attention. I only hope they take notice and shake up the setlist.

  18. Am I the only person that wants to hear/see them perform whatever songs they are in the mood to play? I have my preffered songs to listen to on CD. But when it comes to live performances, how much I enjoy a song is directly related to how much the guys (Jon especially) get into the song. I think they should play whatever songs excite them. Whatever makes them want to keep gettting out there and sharing with us.

Someone mentioined the setlist being boring. I think that the only way that anything at a Bon Jovi show could be boring is if the guys do something they don't really want to do just to please the fans.

Many fans are not happy these days, thinking that finally this band has sell out.

So, you might just get those boring shows, because it looks like Jon is ready to "please" the fans, so they stick around.

  20. We had a radio show here back before Crush and Jon pulled out the liner notes from the CD's to play Love 4 sale. Now that he has his crib notes in a notebook we should be able to hear some of the old stuff. My only show this tour will be Charlotte and I too am getting tired of Shout and Bad Med, Sorry lose Who Says...if Lorenza isn't on the tour we can lose all of Lost Highway..unless David has her on tape on his machines.

I have always requested the one song in sound check at Contennial he swore he never wrote...why not play a little, even if it is a snip it, of Let's Make It Baby?

If my math is right...Charlotte will be my 20th concert. Had to become an adult and not go out on road trips anymore seeing 4 to 6 shows in a week. So lets make this tour one to remember...pull out the liner notes and play what you promised...

Having seen Bon Jovi around 50 times, I would love to see them play "Edge of a Broken Heart" and "99 in the Shade" especially during the summer months. "Shout" sucks the life out show and it is bad enough having to hear it at weddings!

  22. You are all die hard fans..
    Wishes:

Ballad of youth. I'd go to the show for only this song.
Wild is the wind is also a winner. And Someday I'll be Saturday Night, i have not seen it much listed, i love that one. And Never Saygoodbye,Bed of Roses, In&Out of Love, Mrs Robinson, and Somethig for the pain, Dry County...Lay your hands on Me..., Living in Sin is #34??? What is wrong, they should play it every night. A big fat guitar solo spot would be great too.
And why not a sambora set??

    Ballad of Youth
    Fallen from Graceland
    Rosie

And an acoustic born to be my baby!

It won't matter what they play, if fans can not afford to pay what they are charging for tickets in this tour.

  24. They should see what Metallica does every night. They change the setlist up so much that no die hard fan can complain. You never know for a few of the standards.
