An Open Letter To Jon Bon Jovi (Regarding Set Lists)

Dear Mr. Bon Jovi:

I hope this letter finds you well. In reading recent interviews in regards to the upcoming tour, I’ve read a bunch of quotes mentioning some drastic change to the show. My apologies in advance, but I can’t help but chuckle a little when reading them. I must admit it takes a lot to beat down my inner Joe Wilson so he doesn’t come to life and blurt out “You lie”. I’m partially kidding, but only moderately because this isn’t the first time your band has claimed to have rehearsed eighty songs yet only have you perform forty to fifty over the tour. There always seems to be a lot of talk but when it comes time to execute, you rely on your same bag of tricks, some of which go back two decades (“Shout” I’m looking at you). On your most recent tour for Lost Highway there was almost nothing to separate it from previous ones aside from the new tunes and the cover of “Hallelujah”. I’m writing this “open letter” not to chastise you, but to bring it to your attention, because despite what anyone may say about you or your band, you have the capacity to be a devastating live act

I’ve received a few hundred emails in recent months and let me tell you, your fans are pining to see something different. I personally don’t have anything to gain as I will be sitting out your current tour for a myriad of reasons I won’t go into, but the biggest is the song selection. Again, this wouldn’t be an issue if there weren’t continual statements in the press about how many songs are rehearsed or are planned on being played. To be fair, I decided to sit down and see how many actual songs I have seen you perform over the last few decades. What I found surprised me. I have seen a total of thirty-seven shows over the course of seven tours stretching back two decades and have only seen a mere ninety-one songs performed. Sixteen of these are covers (and I’m including snippets including “Jumpin' Jack Flash”, “Good Lovin’”, etc.). So essentially I’ve seen seventy-five original Bon Jovi songs over thirty-seven performances. When looking at this, I decided to see how you matched up against the other “top grossing” acts on the road and here’s what I found:

• Over 37 performances Bon Jovi has done 91 songs (only 75 originals)

• I’ve seen The Rolling Stones 15 times and have seen 97 unique songs

• I’ve seen U2 20 times and have seen 87 unique songs (no snippets included)

• I’ve seen the Dave Matthews Band four times on one album cycle and saw 51 unique songs

• I’ve seen Pearl Jam a mere five times and they have performed 85 unique songs

• I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen 45 times and have seen a whopping 257 unique songs

I’ve seen you in front of a few hundred people in an intimate club, a spirited theater, an roaring arena, a deafening stadium, in the Midwest, out on the East Coast, in New Jersey, at charity gigs and it doesn’t seem to matter where or how I see you, it’s the same recycled show. I think the statistics above are staggering. The only other acts who I have seen ten-plus times and have performed fewer songs than you are Aerosmith and KISS and well…we know how their tours went in 2009. This is your fifth tour in under a decade and at this stage in the game you have to assume that the majority of the people seeing you are return customers who want more than the standard fare. Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand there are a dozen songs that need to be played every night along with five from the new record. But even after that, it should leave you room for two or three rarities that could be rotated continually. Here’s the thing about thinking out of the box; it’s infectious. In a day and age where information is immediately available via texts, Facebook, Twitter, etc, there is immense buzz whenever an artist does something out of the box. You (and the promoters of your tour) will do nothing but gain momentum and an increase in ticket sales as a result of not playing it safe. If for no other reason, you should take more chances to help sales of future shows.

I completely realize that the balance between artistry and fulfilling fan’s expectations is an impossible one. But as you can see from the number of songs I have been witness to, there’s room for improvement. I for one don’t like “Open All Night” from the Bounce record at all (I find the version of the box set superior), however, after hearing you talk so passionately about it, I’d be curious to see it live, because you would stand to change my mind. If you’re really that ardent about that particular song, then you should allow yourself four-minutes to make yourself happy. A rock n’ roll concert should be about adventure and your concerts are no longer roller coaster rides, but safe merry-go-round rides, which are fine, but look at KISS and Aerosmith, two acts who played it safe for too long and as a result, neither can sell-out shows even with $10 tickets. Also, I’ve continually read interviews where you bemoan the loss of the album format. You have mentioned how a whole generation of music fans are just going to download “Brown Sugar” and “Wild Horses” and will never discover track seven on Sticky Fingers (“I Got the Blues”), but isn’t that hypocritical when you only promote your singles and never play track seven (“Burning For Love”, “Hardest Part Is The Night”, “Without Love”, “Wild Is the Wind”, “Dry County”, “My Guitar Lies Bleeding…”, “Mystery Train”, “Hook Me Up”) in concert?

I know you probably think that this letter has been published to scold you, but it’s not. When you set out to make your mark in the 1980’s and in your drive to stay visible during the 1990’s, you created works of art which you asked people to listen to and we did, some of us a little more than others, but we listened intently and for that you should be forever thankful. Despite what you may think of many of your die-hard fans, most of them are highly intelligent, listen to a wide range of music, see movies, read books, travel and are fully evolved humans. All they want from you value for their ticket purchase. They want something more than they would get from an act at the local county fair. You asked them to listen…and they did. More importantly, they know deep down that many of the albums cuts they yearn for are what define you as an artist. You’re more than just some guy who got lucky, became successful on his looks or has made good business decisions. You’re an artist of immeasurable talent and all your fans want is for you to show the world that there is more to Bon Jovi than meets the eye. There’s a vast majority of the population who despise your band and its music, it’s time to prove them wrong. You’re more than a band who appeals to the drunken karaoke sing-a-long fans of the world; when you want to be, you’re one of the best live acts on the planet. I can honestly say without flinching, your band is responsible for one of the five most electrifying concert moments I’ve ever laid witness to. But as you can see from above, you perform a fraction of your songs in concert which almost is admitting that you’re ashamed of most of your back catalog, which you shouldn’t be. I may be a lost cause, but there are thousands of fans who can still be swayed. All your fans want from you is a sign that there is indeed greatness in you and your band. You owe it to AEG, you owe it to your management, you owe it to your fans, you owe it to yourself and above all, you owe it to your legacy.

Sincerely,
Anthony (Tony) Kuzminski

  3. You are so right here, Tony! I've seen Bon Jovi almost a hundred times and there are songs I'm just dying to see! I still have faith (I'm going to 2 shows in May in Jerz and flying to London for 2 shows as well) but I would feel like my hard-earned money was well-spent if I heard something different from the boys!

Whilst the sentiment is good I think Jon has already beaten you. He has said numerous times already that he gets that the fans want more this tour. He has said they are going to play whole albums some nights and then some of the older songs off the first two albums will be played as well.

Hopefully it lives up to this tour.

To Anonymous who posted a comment at 5:36 - you forgot only one thing - Jon lies. He's said it himself and I believe him.

  9. WOW!
That was an amazing post, Tony.
I tweeted it and threw it at bonjovi's tweet acct. Let's see if the man himself will read it.

It truly was a thought out post, and I would LOVE to see him take what you said to heart. I'm a lover of the rarities too.

  10. THANK YOU! I am so bloody sick of Shout, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Good Lovin', et al, I will be heading out to the bar if they do them again.

Bon Jovi needs to shake up their show in a severe way. Tickets are high, as are expectations, and the boys will only benefit by growing instead of standing still.

  12. Awsome Article, Tony! Thank You so much. I am a HUGE Bon Jovi fan and when they played a 2nd Sold Out show in Pittsburgh on March 15th, 2008 I was very disappointed because they didn't play the songs that they played on the 1st show, which, was March 5th. I am looking forward to seeing Bon Jovi when they come to Pittsburgh and I am hoping Jon does read your letter because after all it's US fans that got him where he is today!

    Thanks you, again, Tony!

  13. Well hell, there's nothing left to say! You summed this all up perfectly, everything that came to mind you touched on, and I couldn't agree more. I just posted something on my own blog a few weeks ago about the top five songs we could do with NOT hearing live anymore, and this is a further (and much more well-thought out) representation of that very thought.

Let's hope Jon sees this, and takes it to heart!

Brilliant Tony- Thanks for doing this- I just hope he reads it, absorbs it and appreciates the constructive criticism for what it is....and you aren't a 'lost cause fan.' If you truly didn't care anymore, you would not have taken the time TO care by composing this- And you know I'm feeling ya....you know i am, but I'm trying really really hard to not loose faith, as I know you are- Hopefully Jon will read your letter and take it to heart....that is if he has one left in him-
    cheers xoxo

  16. AMEN! I love this band live and have seen every tour since Slippery, and multiple shows per tour in recent years. Each show I'm a little less impressed, not because it's not a great stage show, but because I've already SEEN it. No surprises. And we're paying more each show, which makes it more frustrating. Some of the magic is gone and it makes me sad. I was extremely fortunate to see the St. Paul stop on the Bounce tour when we got the acoustic set and consider myself incredibly lucky..that was such a special night. I haven't bought tickets for this tour yet, either. I'm not convinced I want to part with so much of my hard-earned cash only to see the umpteenth performance of "Raise Your Hands" and "Shout."

  18. Amen brother!!

I've been lucky enough to see Dry County live twice (and for the record it's fricking AWESOME!!) as is Diamond Ring - another gem (pardon the pun) in the Jovi back catalogue, but I would like to see more of the unusual stuff.

I'm so sick of LOAP!! Lol!!

Tony, you are a sincere and passionate author, that I respect 100% for telling things how they are, no matter how against the band might be seen, and not afraid to be criticized by those, that fail to see that at times for you is painful to have to say what you say.

This time once more is like reading my own thought, but much better explained. I wish things turn out the way you want and Jon already said they will be, but as somebody else has pointed out before me, the only thing we are sure right now, is that Jon lies, so will see.

I've been very lucky to hear in my shows songs like Dry County, Damned, Blood Money, Never Say Goodbye, Lie To Me, Wild Is The Wind, I'll Die For You.. and a couple others, those songs stick in my mind, because all the other "staple" songs, although fun at the shows, they are just the bake potato that always comes with the main course, great but nothing special.

Thanks again Tony, if Bon Jovi would listen to fans like you, they would have a much bigger respect, and wouldn't lose fans in the way.

This article is so spot on! Kudos to you Tony.

I already have heard, that Jon announced to play whole albums and dig deep in their catalogue for this tour. Is he listening to the fans (finally), or did he see Bruce doing it during his last tour, and how well it worked?

Thanks for the insightful article, having been a fan since they were playing small clubs I too long for a return to uncharted territory for them. It's like Journey, I for one am sick of listening to what they call their "Dirty Dozen", I can go twenty years without having to listen to "Open Arms" live again. I would prefer that all bands stop living in the past. I would love to see them play entire albums live (except 7800° Fahrenheit) maybe that's why so many bands have so few fans going to their shows. I for one refuse to pay for the same old, same old. How many times can you listen to the same music before you can't listen to it again. Come on guys break the mold of "Same Old, Same Old. Who knows you might just put more buts in the seats if people know it's going to be an adventure and not just another long journey down a long worn-out road.

  23. First of all, my great wish is that Bon Jovi coming to Chile, then some of my favorite songs are:
    Something to Believe In
    Dirty Little Secret
    Wild is the wind
    Stick to your guns
    She don´t know me
    Hey God
    These Days
    Just Older
    Next 100 years
    I want you
    Dry County
    In these arms
    Diamong Ring
    Blood on Blood
    I am
Welcome to wherever you are, etc, etc

    1) I don't give a rat's ass about Anchovi. I saw them twice ("Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey" tours) due to an ex-girlfriend wanting to go, and they sucked. Jon Anchovi can't sing to save his life.

    2) Your info about KISS is wrong. To set you straight (and that may be a difficult thing, knowing that you're an Anchovi fan)KISS' "Alive/35" 2008/09 tour was very successful. They toured Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., Europe, S. America, Canada, and the U.S.

KISS will have another successful tour this year playing in Ireland, the U.K., Europe, Canada, and the U.S. in support of their new cd "Sonic Boom".

    3) Jon Anchovi should thank Paul Stanley every day for Paul introducing Jon Anchovi to Desmond Child. Desmond Child made Anchovi rich.

Wow, seventy-five original songs over thirty-seven performances. And you bag on KISS? I've seen more than 40 original songs over eleven performances, in the period 2000-2009. I'm happy. People have different reasons for going to shows. I think the primary one should be to see a show and be a part of the audience.

  28. Must admit I'm not a BonJovi fan, but one of the things that make me a huge Springsteen and Pearl Jam fan is the variety you get from show to show. (Specially in PJs case-- there are nights when the casual fan might only get one or two songs they recognize.)

I hope for the fans sake, you guys get a kick ass tour. And that JBJ keeps his word this time.

It seems as if Jon has read your letter. (Our he wasn't lying this time). The first show in Hawaii had a pretty interisting and mixed up setlist what I've read so far.
And a lot of very old songs noone would've expected.

OMG T- GO check the first show's setlist out from Hawaii last night! They switched it up ALOT, mean ALOT!!!! Maybe he read your letter? SO COol!!!! Has me even thinking i may want to buy another ticket or 2 to other shows if they keep this up!!!!

  31. They had an interesting set list in Honolulu, and they will have to keep their word of changing the set lists, they need to do something to bring fans in, because with the prices this tour, the same old, same old set lists are not cutting it any more.

We'll see if this continues or is the "hook" as usual.

  32. Michele9:01 AM

well said... thank you for representing me in this letter. I have been a dedicated fan for 25 years and I couldn't have said these things better myself! I am seeing their current tour in 3 different cities and it would be great to have 3 different set lists. Come on Jon, don't let us down!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great post! It's the same exact reason why I haven't been to a Poison concert in years. They bring in the same set year after year! What a snoozer.

I will say this though, every time I hear Livin' On A Prayer in a bar or club (even if it's a club that plays mix of mostly R&B music) the crowd goes nuts!

Same affect with 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' by Def Leppard.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, so much for oldies and switching the set lists, the last 3 concerts have been carbon copies, almost to the "T".

I hear that is due to technical problems with the fancy set up. Yeah, that same fancy stage that seems to justify the ridiculous prices they are charging. What happened to good ole guitars and just sing (cheaper) to your fans, the tour have just started, so I won't say the word "lie" just yet, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous1:12 PM

Well Tony, it looks like Jon didn't listen to you after all.

They started at they promised, but I guess after fans rushed to buy more tickets, to catch the oldies, now it's back to the same cookie cutter set lists, changing 2/3 songs per show, don't cut it.

Jonny boy lied to the fans again.

  36. 1) Very good letter! I wish he had read it.
    2) I have seen Open All Night twice now (out of the 4 times they have played it... ever) and though it was a treat and pretty damn good live, I would gladly trade both of them for a "guitar lies bleeding..."
    3) I just caught 3 shows (Dallas, Dallas, and Tulsa). I shouldn't have wasted my money on Tulsa. Seeing them back to back in one city seems like the only way to catch a different show.
    4) Where in the hell is BrokenPromiseLand? It is only arguably the best track on the album! Why did they retire Thorn right before Dallas? Why in the hell are they playing "Work" when there are much better songs on the Circle that they are not playing?!?
    5) I do not care if I ever hear Lost Highway or I'll Sleep When I'm Dead again. Do they not realize they have an endless list of great songs?
    6) The only track I'd add to your list would be is "This Ain't A Love Song" I asked Obie to pass along my request while talking to him at the Dallas night #2 show. If Obie did, Jon ignored him and played "Make a Memory"... a song they played every show last tour.
    7) I don't understand it.

So far I am disappointed in this tour! I hope they can change my mind in Chicago.

    ReplyDelete
  37. it's true maybe we never listen exactly what I want. But in my opinion we have to understand that is very difficult that everybody go out happy of a concert, because people always is going to prefer different songs, and I think that in this case Bon Jovi, decide to sing the most popular songs.
