The following email was received today in regards to this post.
Well Tony, it looks like Jon didn't listen to you after all.
They started at they promised, but I guess after fans rushed to buy more tickets, to catch the oldies, now it's back to the same cookie cutter set lists, changing 2/3 songs per show, don't cut it.
Jonny boy lied to the fans again.

They did Never Say Goodbye, In These Arms & Runaway last night in Omaha...are those not rare enough for the anonymous emailer?
ReplyDeleteHonest question. Has the band ever had a constantly changing set list (a la Pearl Jam) on any tour ever? They have a big production that requires a somewhat static set list do they not? They're playing different songs this tour so I'm gonna cut them a break. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit to being conflicted about this email. On one hand, this tour will be the 16th time I have seen Bon Jovi and undoubtedly the 16th time I'll hear Bad Name, Prayer and Wanted. Plus, I can't stand We Got It Going On. Bigtime bathroom break.
ReplyDeleteBut they are a mainstream band and as much as I want to hear These Days in its entirety I highly doubt 50,000 other fans do. They are also not Springsteen. His fans (which I count myself as one) are open to hearing back catalogue stuff on a nightly basis. I'm a huge Jovi fan but do I really want to hear If I Was Your Mother or some other obscure and arguably sub-par album track just for the sake of shaking up the setlist? Um, no. Springsteen's back catalogue stuff is better IMHO.
That said, throwing in Never Say Goodbye, Living In Sin, Dry County, any other These Days song besides Something For The Pain on a regular basis would be welcome. I think now that the tour is in high gear, we'll see some more rarities put into the set. Hopefully by the time they hit Toronto in July, We Got It Going On will be long gone! One can hope.
Well the Omaha show took place after the e-mail, and considering Runaway and In These Arms were regulars on the previous tour, whether or not they qualify as rarities is debatable. Prior to Omaha, you could predict quite accurately what songs were going to be played and in what order.
ReplyDeleteJon also specifically promised songs from the first two albums in Anaheim and didn't deliver.
Runaway and Never Say Goodbye are not rare. Puhleeze.
ReplyDeleteRare would be Edge of A Broken Heart, Stick To Your Guns, 99 In The Shade or STRONG album tracks people know. ULTRA rare would be Stay, Wedding Day, etc.
God. The tour just started and people are complaining. Already.
It's a two year tour. They are trying to see what works and what doesn't.
And let's face it, when was the last time ANYONE played Get Ready anywhere. Not a crowd pleasing song. Just because it's rare and hasn't been played in 20 years doesn't mean it's a GOOD song. THough Shot Through The Heart and Silent Night are GOOD, rare songs.
A better choice would be 99 In the Shade, Stick To Your Guns, She Don't Know Me, I Believe, or, even, Every Word Was a Piece of My Heart or Bang a Drum etc.
These are songs people know and if they don't, would like. Get Ready isn't going to win anyone over.
They should play smaller places were people want to hear the songs. Places that would erupt if Bang a Drum or Everyword Was A Piece of My Heart was played.
Housewives who want to hear Bad Name or Bad Medicine should stay home. Even the band probably doesn't want to hear those awful, cliche ridden, cheesey, unlistenable songs. They suck. As a band, they should be embarassed that those songs exist in their catalouge.
Real Bon Jovi fans don't like those songs. We like songs with emotional connections. Songs that make you feel. Miss Fourth of July. This Ain't A Love Song. Santa Fe. Songs that make you feel something.
But, let's give this tour some time to grow. To breathe. I think, hope, many surprises are in store.

ReplyDeleteDont hold your breath for She Don't Know Me as it is the only song on any Bon Jovi album that wasn't written by Jon or Jon & Richie and Jon has said it won't be played again
