The Dave Matthews Band lost LeRoi Moore, their horn player a little over a year ago. It was amidst a tragic series of events, but in the wake of his death, it forced the band to create their best record to date.
On SNL last night, the band delivered two great performances ("Shake Me Like A Monkey" & "You & Me"), but what impressed me was the band photo that appears when the show returns from commercials. It was a picture of everyone performing with the band. Not just the core members, but everyone including Tim Reynolds, Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross. None of these people are official members, but it was refreshing to see them acknowledged. I know this doesn't seem like a big deal to many people, but some acts pretend that certain musicians who are integral to the band, don't exist.
Here's to hoping that when this certain band appears on SNL in December they show everyone who performs with them in the band shot.
Not only were their performances good, but Dave was hilarious as Ozzy Osbourne in his sketch with Andy Samberg.
ReplyDeleteAs for this other "certain band" you refer to, I'd be pretty shocked if they suddenly included everyone next month when they seem to have gone out of their way not to for the past 15 years.
Did you see said band on Conan Friday night? Jon was interviewed and for the first time, the working class "everyman" came across as super arrogant and really out of touch. Even the little bit with Richie was badly done. Oh, and their performance was totally flat. That won't sell tickets.
ReplyDelete@ Rachel-Sadly, you are 100% correct about the image.
ReplyDelete@ Perry-very, very disappointed in Conan performance. It was weak and didn't even have that URGE to connect. I haven't always been a fan of "Have A Nice Day" but sometimes, the passion comes through in the performance, none of that was present Friday night.
I noticed the same thing and was so happy with it. Tim, Rashawn, and Jeff are so important to the current sound of DMB; it's so nice that they were recognized for that. That "other" band will probably never acknowledge Hugh, which is even more of a crime than it would've been not to acknowledge the DMB members.
ReplyDeleteAnd how 'bout that Ozzy impression! So funny of course but what was even better was Dave sitting on the couch next to Bill Hader's caricature of him. JBJ takes himself way too seriously to have let something like that happen!
The Dave Matthews Band is one of those acts who I admire from almost every possible outlet; creatively, artistically, commercially, product-wise, etc.
ReplyDeleteI actually wish I was a bigger fan. I admire them deeply and will see them every few years (buy all the studio records) but I love their live album releases so much, wish I had the $$$ to get all of them.
They are a band whom every other band should model their business around.
